GUSTAVO DE AMORIM
Whenever I talk to my friend Gustavo, the author of this book, I feel sorry. Not for him, because he is extremely intelligent, with such a good sense of humor and a unique cultural level. I feel sorry for those who miss the opportunity to get to know him and to talk to him, either because they’re impatient or because of their prejudice with his hearing privilege.
All those have not had a chance to meet him can now appreciate his thoughts. I’m sure those who were impatient will be jealous of all the hours I’ve spent talking and debating with my good friend. Those who discriminated against him because of his hearing disability will be extremely ashamed and regretful.
But all those who have a chance to read these very well written lines will learn about the experiences of someone who has live like few, and, since an early age, the ups and downs of a life marked by physical disability (in this case, hearing disability). However, this is someone who learned from his experiences, overcame the hurdles, outdid himself, and finally, made such disability an ally, maybe even a friend.
This book is essentially about overcoming hurdles. About transmutation, as the author puts it, of disability into privilege. About how to turn that which is a disadvantage into an advantage. Or as the popular saying goes: “to wring blood from a stone” or “to build a castle with stumbling blocks”.
I sincerely hope that not only the hearing privileged will read this book, as this would be like denying the other part of humankind the wonderful lessons contained on these pages. After all, we are all limited. We all need to learn to cope with our limitations, failures and imperfections.
Therefore, here is the Soul Challenger. A Witty Guide for the Hearing Privileged, but which could well be a Guide for Living.
